Week Commencing 12th April – Sunny days and sealiced springers

  • by

Springtime finally arrived on Speyside and things are hotting up!  With a week of beautiful weather and long sunny days, both air and water temperatures were on there rise – Time for a floating line and a light dressed fly.

Colin Mathieson with 1 of his 2 fish from Rothes – on a floating line and a size 8 cascade.

River heights โ€“ 6in โ€“ 1ft (+/- 2in)
Water Temps โ€“ 39-44F or 4-6C
Air temps โ€“ 0-14C

The start of the week was quite slow with only an odd fish caught, but catches picked up over the 2nd half of the week with fresh, sealiced fish making an appearance in the lower beats.

With water temps now heading to the mid 40s, I’d expect some of these sealiced fish to be heading to the upper beats. Abernethy AC has already started catching and I would suspect Grantown Ass may have had a fish or two over the last few days also. However, the lower river was the place to be last week.

Catch Summary
Upper River ย โ€“ 4 fish reported โ€“ Abernethy
Middle River โ€“ 9 fish reported โ€“ Kinermony (2), Knockando (5), Craigellachie (2)
Lower River โ€“ 21 fish reported โ€“ ย Orton (5), Rothes (7) Arndilly (8), Upper Arndilly (1)
Average size โ€“ around 10lb. Biggest fish reported 20lbs

I also heard some more big sea trout were caught.

Here’s a few snaps from the beats.

Looking ahead to this coming week

Weather looks settled and no precipitation forecast. River levels will continue to fall slowly and I would think water temperatures will hover around the mid 40s. It looks like another nice week to be on the river.

With travel restrictions now removed it’s time to get out and about and chase silver again.

Tightlines to all.
